Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Is Going To Add A Major Character,
In 2014, moviegoers learned that combining Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt with time travel and aliens was the perfect recipe for box office success. Edge of Tomorrow was both a critical and commercial success, and last year, director Doug Liman announced that a sequel was in the works. Cruise and Blunt will reprise Bill Cage and Rita Vrataski, respectively, in Edge of Tomorrow 2, officially known as Live Die Repeat and Repeat. But along with them, Liman has revealed that they’ll be joined by a third important character who he claims will steal the show. While explaining how Live Die Repeat and Repeat will improve on where most movie sequels stumble, Liman said:
I think what people tend to do with sequels is they just make them bigger. And I’m like, ‘No, a sequel should be smaller.’ Like, you did the first film as sort of the ad campaign for the sequel, so now you don’t need as much action, and in the case of Edge of Tomorrow, people obviously loved the comedy and they loved the situation, so we can do way more focused on Tom’s character and Emily Blunt’s character, and there’s a third character in the sequel that’s gonna for sure steal the movie. We can focus on that…I don’t need an action sequence every two minutes.
Doug Liman didn’t provide any other clues about this mysterious character during his appearance on MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, so now begins the speculation about how this person will fit into Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Still, the fact that Liman promises that this character will steal this movie is a bold statement. Could they be a fellow solider who fought the Mimics alongside Rita Vrataski? Are they an officer that Bill Cage knows? Are they a civilian who was also affected by an Alpha Mimic’s blood? Time will tell just how this character will impress those who pack the theater to see Live Die Repeat and Repeat.
No plot details have been released about Live Die Repeat and Repeat yet, but since Doug Liman has described the feature as being “a sequel that’s a prequel,” we can surmise that there will be plenty of time-loopy action. When Edge of Tomorrow ended, Bill Cage had succeeded in killing the Omega Mimic, pulling him back in time once more (albeit slightly before when he had been waking up following his previous deaths) and learning that the Mimics had ended their hostile actions. Cage then found Rita Vrataski again, laughing when she greeted him with the same bluntness (pun intended) she had all the other times. Whether these two are fighting Mimics again or a new threat, it will be interesting to see how their stories intertwine with this mystery player Liman is teasing.
Live Die Repeat and Repeat doesn’t have a release date assigned yet, so stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on its progress as they come in.
