“I think there is a real movement in humanity where we are embracing philanthropy and the idea of giving back, whether its through our time, purchasing choices or donation,” Boyd, one of World Economic Forum’s 100 Global Leaders of Tomorrow, tells InStyle. “The fashion industry is extremely diverse culturally, and through this global network social good and ‘consciousness’ permeates.”

Here, we chat with Boyd about the meaning of Olivela, how the entire process works, and what she has her eye on buying from the site.
Tell us a little about the name. What does Olivela mean and how do you say it?
ah – li – VAY – lah
Olivela is derived from two words: Olive and Vela. The olive tree represents growth and wisdom and Vela is the Latin word for ‘sails of a ship.’ Olivela helps set children forth on the right path in life.
When Malala Yousafzai, who is the youngest laureate of the Nobel Peace Prize, invited me to celebrate her 19th birthday, we visited refugee camps in Dadaab in Kenya and Mahama, Rwanda and it crystallized at that very moment just how much good we could do for a very small amount of money for kids in serious need around the globe.

When you buy something on Olivela you are personally funding an amazing charitable cause that improves the lives of children in need throughout the world.
Olivela is designed to be an enjoyable, elevated and easy shopping experience with full transparency on how your purchase makes an impact in the lives of children around the world. Each shopper has a personalized online dashboard called “The Olivela Effect” which tracks the impact of each purchase which is updated in real time and can be accessed & shared via social 24/7. Will you be adding other causes in addition to the Malala Fund?
Throughout the year we will introduce additional charitable partners all of which share our vision of improving the lives of children throughout the world. We’ll also be adding more luxury designers and categories.
What was the process like getting brands to work with you on this new endeavor?
I personally met with designers and brands to present the concept of Olivela and determine how we could work together. We have been very fortunate that some of the world’s best designer brands—including Valentino, Givenchy, Stella McCartney, Jimmy Choo, Dolce & Gabbana, Aquazzura, Tod’s, Marc Jacobs and Edie Parker—believed in our vision of improving the lives of children around the world and jumped on board to support immediately.
