Is Spider-Man: Homecoming Hinting At A Villain For The Sequel?,
Peter Parker has already experienced a fair amount of excitement as a superhero from swinging around Queens and participating in Captain America: Civil War, but next month in Spider-Man: Homecoming, he’ll hit a new milestone when he fights super villains for the first time, specifically The Vulture, The Tinkerer and The Shocker. We can count on the Webbed Wonder facing at least one other colorful criminal in 2019’s Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, though it will a long time before we learn who this adversary will be. However, promotional material for the first movie may be hinting that The Jackal exists in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Spider-Man: Homecoming app can now be downloaded, and in one of the section, you can browse through the videos, texts and voicemails on Peter Parker’s phone. As one Reddit user noticed, one of the texts shows Peter’s friend Ned telling our hero that their teacher, Ms. Warren, keeps asking about Peter’s absences. Ms Warren will be played by Orange is the New Black actress Selenis Leyva, but what’s more important is that last name of hers. In the comics, The Jackal’s real name is Miles Warren, and he was one of Peter’s teachers in college until he became a super villain following Gwen Stacy’s death.
Could Ms. Warren’s name just be a subtle Easter egg? Perhaps. Since she’s one of Spider-Man: Homecoming’s minor characters, this may just be the creative team’s way of calling back to one of the Wall-Crawler’s lesser-known adversaries. Plus, back when The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was being promoted, there were several Spider-Man evildoers teased in special marketing (including Jackal), and there’s no guarantee that all of them would have shown up had the series continued.
That being said, Miles Warren did have a wife in the comics, and while the Spider-Man: Homecoming series will focus on Peter’s time in high school, it would be easy enough to bring Miles in either as this woman’s wife or relative. Not only that, the first Homecoming movie is featuring antagonists that weren’t used in any of the previous Spider-Man movies. If Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 decides it wants to continue featuring fresh, sinister faces, then The Jackal would be a prime candidate. With his cloning experiments and unstable nature, he would make a worthy foe for the young hero.
It’s far too soon to place any sure bets on The Jackal appearing in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, but rest assured, when we hear any news about who Spidey will battle in his next solo adventure, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, you can look forward to Tom Holland’s Peter Parker facing Michael Keaton’s Vulture when Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7.
Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is two years away, but the first movie coming next month might potentially be hinting at one of Spidey’s next adversaries.
