The Adorable Gift The Four Weddings And A Funeral Director Gave Kumail Nanjiani,
Kumail Nanjiani is having a pretty good year so far. Not only is he a highlight on HBO’s Silicon Valley, but his romantic comedy The Big Stick debuted this year to positive reception. Nanjiani wrote the film with his wife Emily V. Gordon, and the story is based on their relationship. When writing it, Nanjiani turned to one of his favorite movies of all time, Four _Weddings and a Funeral_, for inspiration. Nanjiani seriously loves this movie, as evidenced by recently shared a story over Twitter about his relationship to the movie and his eventual meeting with its writer, Richard Curtis.
Four Weddings and a Funeral is a film that Kumail Nanjiani writes he has seen at least 50 times, and every time it makes him laugh and cry. He related to the film in high school, and it’s been a major influence on his life, even watching the film on the day of his own wedding. Two months ago, Nanjiani presented at the WGA Awards, and Richard Curtis was in attendance. Nanjiani took his chance and blabbed “for too long” about what Curtis’ work means. Nanjiani was later told that this meant a lot to Curtis, and the two would later meet face to face at a concert and have a great conversation. Just as The Big Stick is about to premiere, Nanjiani received this package from Curtis.
It’s four frames from Richard Curtis’ personal reel of Four Weddings and a Funeral. As Kumail Nanjiani immediately noticed, it’s the scene where Hugh Grant’s character is second guessing his wedding, right before the big climax. Nanjiani now owns an actual piece of his favorite movie, which is the ultimate gift for any cinema fan. It’s an extremely touching story, and you can read it in full over on Nanjiani’s Twitter page.
Kumail Nanjiani also noted that if there is a lesson to be learned from his story, it’s simply to be nice to someone. In his words:
So I guess I’m saying: be nice to someone who loves what you do. It’ll mean more to them than you can ever understand.
Four Weddings and a Funeral tells the story of Charles (Hugh Grant at perhaps his most charming), who encounters the same woman (Andie MacDowell) at four different weddings and one funeral over the course of several years. He ultimately develops feelings for her, and the film follows the struggle of finding someone to love and what that means. It ranks high on the list of great romantic comedies and is a recommended watch for anyone who’s a fan of the genre. Giving how much Kumail Nanjiani loves it, it’s definitely worth checking out.
Kumail Nanjiani’s latest movie, The Big Stick, hits theaters on June 23, and will have at least one direct reference to Four Weddings and a Funeral.
Kumail Nanjiani is a Four Weddings and a Funeral superfan, and he revealed a great story over social media about his encounter with the film’s director and the amazing gift he ended up receiving.
