‘Locke and Key’ Switch: ‘It’ Director Replaces Scott Derrickson

Andy Muschietti will take over helming duties on the Hulu pilot for Derrickson, who has a conflict with TNT’s ‘Snowpiercer’ reboot.

There’s a behind-the-scenes change on Hulu’s adaptation of Locke and Key.

Andy Muschietti, who has directed Stephen King’s It and Mama, will take over helming duties for the previously announced Scott Derrickson. Derrickson had to exit the Hulu pilot because of a scheduling conflict with TNT’s pilot adaptation of Snowpiercer.

Muschietti will also be credited as an exec producer on the Joe Hill comic book project and join his sister and established producer Barbara Muschietti.

Picked up to pilot in April, Locke and Key is based on the IDW Comics horror/ fantasy series that revolves around three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine only to find the house has magical keys that give them a vast array of powers. Little do they know, a devious demon also wants the keys, and will stop at nothing to attain them.

Comics creator Joe Hill will pen the script for the hourlong pilot. Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel, The Strain, Jack Ryan) will exec produce alongside Lindsey Springer. Cuse will serve as showrunner.

The Hulu pilot order comes six years after Fox teamed with prolific producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as well as Steven Spielberg and Amblin to adapt the beloved property. IDW CEO Ted Adams, IDW Entertainment president David Ozer and Hill will serve as exec producers.

IDW packaged the project with the goal of securing a straight-to-series order for the property. The package was taken out to bidders — including Netflix, HBO and FX — last month.

Fox previously attempted to bring the comic to life during the 2010-11 broadcast season, with Josh Friedman penning the script. Produced by 20th Century Fox Television, the drama went to pilot with Mark Pellegrino, Miranda Otto, Jesse McCartney, Sarah Bolger and Nick Stahl attached.

Muschietti is repped by WME.
