Apparently Chewbacca Won’t Be The Only Wookiee In The Han Solo Movie,
The new director of the upcoming Han Solo movie, Ron Howard, has been making a habit of sending us images from the set that don’t actually tell us much. However, a new picture does seem to reveal one piece of information. A new behind the scenes pic shows the actor wearing the Chewbacca costume watching a scene playback on the monitor. However, it’s the monitor which is the most interesting, as it appears to show two Wookies in the frame. Check it out.
While it’s a bit difficult to make out in Ron Howard’s tweet as the monitors on the right-hand side are slightly cut off, there are clearly two large heads close together on the screen. If one of them is Joonas Suotamo playing Chewbacca, which would make sense since the actor is the one watching the playback, then it looks like the other head is about the same size and shape, which would indicate a second Wookie.
The only time we’ve seen Wookies other than Chewbacca was in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, when we witnessed the Clone Army battling the Wookies on their home planet. Beyond that other Wookies have made appearances in some of the expanded universe material, but that’s about it.
It’s impossible to tell for certain what they’re looking at on the monitor but the shot certainly appears to show the two Wookies very close together. If we believe that one of them is Chewbacca, then maybe the other is a member of his family. Chewie’s family made their debut in the infamous Star Wars Holiday Special and while that, along with their other appearances have been largely removed from canon, it’s certainly possible they could be making their feature film debut.
Since the upcoming Han Solo movie will see the title character early in his life there’s a good chance that the film will depict the first meeting between Han and Chewie. If so, it’s as likely to take place on the Wookie home world as anywhere, meaning there will likely be many Wookies showing up at some point in the story.
One thing that this image does show us is that filming of the Untitled Han Solo movie is clearly in full swing. This follows some delays due to the fact that the movie had to change directors mid-stream. Ron Howard is taking over for the duo of Phil Lord and Chris Miller who left the project following creative differences with Lucasfilm. While filming was initially expected to wrap this month, the delay has pushed the end of principal photography to some time in early September.
The Han Solo movie wasn’t brought up during the recent Disney D23 Expo so we’re still limited to Ron Howard tweets as far as getting our own look at the movie. The film is still expected to hit theaters in May of 2018.
